Murrah Class of 62

40th Reunion

by Russ Read

On an unusually cool spring day the class of 62 strode into town.
They came from near and far to renew old friendships.
They came with stories of grown children and yes even grand children.
We left in 62 a cocky group to make our mark in the world.
We returned having made that mark and more.
The festivities started with jazz at Sherry’s.

We soon became comfortable with our new looks.
What’s a little gray hair but a sign of wisdom?
What’s a few extra pounds but more to hug?
The stories poured forth like the wine & beer.
Where are you today?
What have you been doing with yourself?
But eventually the night ended and we drug ourselves away.

Saturday started with brunch at Judy’s.

More new/old faces and more stories.
The past forty years soon melted away.
Who’s missing?
Who do you stay in touch with?
What do you know about so & so?
Oh I had such a crush on them in the sixth grade.
And yet once again it was time to leave.
Gotta take a nap you know.

The Capitol Inn was next on our agenda.
The big event.
Time to get serious.
It was party time.

And yet more new/old faces.
And yes more stories.

You only had to say, “Food is being served,” once to this crowd.
And true to our southern heritage the catfish was a winner.
Someone was overheard to ask, “Sushi isn’t bait?”

After our bellies were full President for Life Billy called us to order.

Whereupon Charlie ‘Man,’ Reese & Billy took us down memory lane.
We sang old songs quite out of key.
We relived current events of the 60’s.
And we remembered those who are no longer with us.
Golly, did all of those things really happen?

Then the band took to the stage and we took to the floor.
It’s amazing what those old bones still can do.

We didn’t want it to end—even paid the band to extend their gig.
But end it must.
Promises were made to stay in touch.
The farewells were filled with happiness and sadness.

Sunday brought a fitting end as the skies wept,
As we packed up our memories and headed home.
But do not despair as we will do this again and just maybe we will stay in touch.
